Custom Woodturnings by A. Brown
I was attending a woodworking expo in 2002 and bought a midi-lathe on impulse. It was all downhill from there. My current interest is primarily turned bowls from reclaimed wood. I don't harvest tree to obtain lumber, but rather find wood from trees removed by a local tree service or am given logs from friends that lost trees to the weather. As a result, most of the wood I used is typically soft maple, walnut, cherry, or elm. My typical turning style follows the conventional flow of rough turning the green wood, drying for a year (sometimes two or three, depending on how busy I am), then finish turning. Unless requested otherwise by a customer, all my bowls are finished in a food safe, all natural walnut oil, then buffed with carnuba wax.
I currently have turnings for sale at Starring "the Gallery" (www.starringthegallery) in downtown Northville, MI. This is a wonderful gallery that I would highly recommend. I have occasionally been commissioned to do some work (typically in exchange for wood). However, please be advised that this process takes about a year due to the drying process.
